MChem students present placement research

Published: 9 June 2011

4th year Masters in Chemistry (MChem) students have recently taken part in a poster display presenting their research results to the rest of the learning community in Southampton.

Their work was reviewed by students, staff and some industrial partners who also helped in judging the overall standard of the work.

Students have been placed within a range of organisations as part of their degree, some doing research within Southampton’s laboratories, some in industry and commercial businesses and others travelling to work in organisations abroad. The rich diversity of their work came across strongly throughout the afternoon event.

Presenting placement research

Dr Jeremy Hinks, says: “Poster events provide the opportunity for students to present their research in a format that is new to them. Representing their work in a short poster and then discussing its content with colleagues is a suitable culmination to the hard work associated with their projects. It is a great experience for them to communicate their findings to each other and to our industrial partners. They find out the diversity of opportunities available from each others' work and they develop communication skills that are so important to their eventual employers. Some of our MChem students have secured jobs with the companies that they worked with during their placements. A fantastic outcome for them and a fitting testament to the excellent impression they made while on placement and the highly employable calibre of chemistry students from Southampton.”
