Dr Marcel Utz has been promoted to the position of Professor of Magnetic Resonance. He joined the University of Southampton in 2012 from the University of Virginia in the USA.

“I was pleased to receive this academic recognition after two years at Southampton,” he says. “Our multidisciplinary research group covers many areas and benefits from our active participation in many international collaborations.”

Marcel’s research involves the use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to examine biological systems in microfluidic ‘lab on a chip’ devices – understanding chemical reactions at a molecular level through this flexible analytical technique. With his group of three PhD students and a postdoctoral researcher, Marcel uses Chemistry’s newly renovated NMR laboratories in his research.

He also teaches a popular but demanding third year undergraduate module on the fundamentals of quantum mechanics with Professor Malcolm Levitt; they were delighted that the students rose to the challenge of understanding the concepts of this important and complex subject.
