Chemistry at the University of Southampton has made impressive gains in one of the most prestigious league tables of UK universities, reflecting outstanding teaching by experienced academics in well-equipped laboratories.

Chemistry has jumped 10 places in the Guardian University Guide 2017, from 26th to 16th out of 120 universities in the table. This rise in the rankings follows increasing satisfaction by Chemistry students of the quality of education they have received and their future career prospects.

In all, 94 per cent of Chemistry students surveyed were satisfied both with their course and the quality of their lecturers’ teaching.

“It is great to see that Chemistry has made progress in the Guardian University Guide this year moving up ten places. All our undergraduate Chemistry degrees were accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2015. Our degrees provide the foundations for successful careers for our students in work, and in further study and research.” said Prof Phil Gale, Head of Chemistry.

The rankings in the Guardian’s league tables are based on official data collected by the Higher Education Statistics Agency and on the National Student Survey published by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE)

Chemistry at Southampton is also highly regarded for its world class research. In the last Government assessment of research quality (REF 2014) the subject performed exceptionally well, with 94 per cent of its overall submission judged as world-leading or internationally excellent. This placed the University of Southampton’s submission for Chemistry in 8th position for research power and 6th for research intensity. In the international Academic Ranking of World Universities (2015) Chemistry at Southampton is ranked 4th in the UK.
