Chemistry National Student Survey 2016 results demonstrate high student satisfaction
Results of this year’s National Student Survey (NSS) show excellent satisfaction levels for Chemistry degrees at the University of Southampton. Among the categories being rated by final year students, teaching, personal development, academic support and course organisation and management scored particularly highly.
The results support Chemistry’s ranking as fourth in the Russell Group for teaching (the Guardian, 2017). 100% of MChem Chemistry with a six month placement students agreed that ‘staff are good at explaining things’ and ‘the course is intellectually stimulating’, whilst 96% of MChem Chemistry students agreed that ’staff have made the subject interesting’ and ‘staff are enthusiastic about what they are teaching’.
As a result, many students felt they had benefitted from their personal development. 92% of BSc Chemistry students agreed that ‘my communication skills have improved’, whilst 92% of BSc Chemistry and MChem Chemistry students agreed that ‘as a result of the course, I feel confident in tackling unfamiliar problems’.
Student satisfaction with academic support and course organisation and management were highlighted through the survey. 100% of BSc Chemistry students agreed that ‘I have received sufficient advice and support with my studies’ and 100% of MChem Chemistry with a six month placement students agreed that ‘I have been able to contact staff when I needed to’. 100% of BSc Chemistry and 96% of MChem Chemistry with a six month placement students agreed that ‘the course is well organised and is running smoothly’.
For Chemistry overall course satisfaction rates were very high, with 100% of BSc Chemistry students and 96% of MChem Chemistry with a six month placement students satisfied or very satisfied with the overall quality of their course.

A defining feature of this department is the way in which undergraduates are treated as partners in the learning process, with lecturers willing to take feedback and correction from students in a positive fashion.
At the end of my third year, I secured the opportunity to work with NASA at their Ames Research Centre located in Silicon Valley, California. Southampton was extremely supportive with helping me make this placement a reality.
I was very impressed by the University, I liked the look of the campus and everyone was very friendly.
