Phil Bartlett, Professor of Electrochemistry, has been honoured for his 30 year-long collaboration with fellow scientists in Argentina. He received the Dr Luis Federico Leloir award from the country’s Science Minister Lino Barañao in recognition of his contribution to international scientific co-operation.

Links between electrochemists in the Universities of Southampton and Buenos Aires began with Professor Roger Parsons who was Head of Electrochemistry in Southampton from 1985 to 1992. Phil developed the collaboration further to include joint research, student exchanges and an electrochemistry summer school in Buenos Aires in 2000. The latest initiative involves his colleague Dr Nuria Garcia-Araez and former exchange students and now Professors in Argentina working in the field of lithium batteries.

Phil heads the influential 17-strong Electrochemistry Research Group at Southampton. It works in many areas including fuel cell and battery technology and produced the successful spin-out company Ilika. Southampton electrochemists also enjoy a global reputation in teaching the subject and offer a new taught Masters programme.

Argentina is also an important location for the extraction of lithium with large reserves in its salt lakes high up in the Andes. It is a key element used in modern lithium ion batteries.
