Dr Thomas Logothetis has been promoted to Principal Teaching Fellow in recognition of his achievements in supporting chemistry students to gain valuable practical experience in the laboratory.

He teaches several courses and manages the synthesis-based Level 5 Teaching Laboratory and instrument room and its team of technicians. Thomas also organises and runs the popular Organic Chemistry Summer School each year to give undergraduates insights into professional laboratory practice.

Since 2009, he has been awarded four Vice-Chancellors Awards, two for teaching, one for chemistry education, and a team award with his colleagues for sustainability. Thomas also received an inaugural Excellence in Teaching Award from his students in 2013. In December 2016, he was awarded a Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

He says: “I love teaching because I always wanted to share my knowledge and because I delight in seeing others understand and apply their newly gained insights, skills and knowledge

“The sparkle in a student’s eye once they grasp a difficult concept or solve a problem themselves after I prompt them and guide them in the right direction, without providing a solution, is something, I think, that is the best reward for any teacher.”

Head of Chemistry, Professor Gill Reid says: “It is particularly pleasing to see Thomas gaining recognition for his commitment to teaching. Providing our students with an excellent education and training in practical Chemistry is a key priority in Southampton and Thomas has contributed strongly to this objective over a number of years.”

Thomas joined the University of Southampton in 2003 after academic posts in Germany, South Africa and Italy, predominantly specialising in synthetic organic chemistry and fluorine research.
