Southampton soars in Chemistry subject rankings for Complete University Guide 2022

The University of Southampton has risen 14 places to be listed among the top 20 locations in the UK to study Chemistry in the Complete University Guide 2022.

Southampton is ranked 19th in the UK for Chemistry in the latest Guide, thanks in part to rising scores for student satisfaction and graduate prospects. 
 
The Complete University Guide is generated from metrics covering both research and educational activity, with Southampton rising two places to be ranked 15th overall for 2022. 
 
Dr Paul Duckmanton, Undergraduate Director of Chemistry Programmes, says: “We’re incredibly happy with how much Chemistry at Southampton has risen in the Complete University Guide tables this year.  
 
“We have been working directly with students to improve our course and putting things in place to prepare and support our students when entering the increasingly competitive job market. It’s great that our efforts are being recognised by both the students and employers, and it puts Southampton Chemistry in a strong position to continue building in these and other areas.  
 
“The changes we’re making to our degrees to increase flexibility, focus on areas important to students and employers, and open up placement opportunities across the world make Southampton an fantastic place to study.” 
  
Chemistry at Southampton was ranked joint first for research intensity in the Complete University Guide 2022. This research feeds directly into high-quality teaching, where undergraduate and postgraduate students are learning about the latest discoveries in chemistry as soon as they happen. 
 
In the 2020 National Student Survey 95% of chemistry students said they were satisfied or very satisfied with the overall quality of their course. A recent £12m investment in Chemistry facilities enables students to study in outstanding laboratories, using high-tech equipment which mirrors what they’ll work with in industry. 
 
Six Chemistry lecturers have been awarded Senior Fellowships from the Higher Education Academy, demonstrating a commitment to teaching, learning and the student experience. The University also has a research group which is dedicated to enhancing education in chemistry.
