Event details
These interactive panel has been designed with our students in mind. Panellists will be discussing the challenges they faced entering into employment and sharing with you lessons they have learnt.
Past graduates are invited to return to the University and give talks to our current students about their career path since leaving. It's an excellent opportunity for them to pass on their experience and expertise of the world of work.
There will be 4 panellists followed by an informal ‘drinks and pizza’ reception.
Panel Member | Job title | Company | Degree title | Year of graduation |
Charlotte Bath | Materials Engineer | DNV GL | MChem (with Six Month Placement) | 2014 |
Following my graduation in July last year, I moved to Loughborough to join a two year graduate scheme at DNV GL . It is an international engineering consultancy providing technical advice to the Maritime, and Oil and Gas sectors among others. I am currently training as a Materials Engineer within the Oil and Gas division. My role involves conducting fault and incident investigations of both onshore and offshore assets, and chemical analysis and identification of unknown materials. This uses techniques and instrumentation I became familiar with at university e.g. Infra-red spectrometry. Through the company, I have also become a STEM ambassador and hope to inspire young students to get involved in science and engineering.
Rev Dr Paul Chamberlain | Vicar | Church of England | MChem Chemistry | 1997 |
Studied chemistry at Southampton for 4 years, with 6 months in industry working for Zeneca Agrochemicals. Went to Bristol University to study for a PhD in chemistry and ecology – using analytical chemistry to unravel the feeding preferences of soil dwelling insects. Then worked in Lancaster as a research scientist for the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology , for 7 years. Worked as a part of an interdisciplinary team studying soil and soil organisms. By the time I left that role, I was working on long-term change in British soils, and was doing very little chemistry at all. Had a career change a few years ago, went back to University again, and I am now a vicar in Lee-on-the-Solent.
Dan Evans | Assistant Head teacher | St Teresa’s School | BSc Chemistry | 1996 |
Since graduating I have taught in six private schools and performed a number of roles including Head of Department, Deputy Head and Assistant Head. Throughout my career I have taught Chemistry to A-Level and Biology and Physics at Key Stage Three. As well as teaching I have acted as a form/personal tutor and been a resident tutor in a boarding house. Outside of teaching I have written a number of Chemistry books/revision guides, advised other schools on teaching chemistry and how to develop their chemistry departments. In addition I work for an examination board moderating practical work and writing examination questions.
Dr Jessica Rouse | Managing Director | Emphasis | PhD Chemistry (Materials Science) | 2010 |
Following her studies she undertook a consultancy project via GraduateOn, a scheme to support students in gaining their first job role. This involved consulting for Butlin’s for 6 months to improve efficiencies and reduce costs. She undertook this role to gain experience in consulting.
Jessica later joined a specialist management consultancy firm, OTM Consulting who provide technical and strategic support to companies in the energy sector. In her role she advised global firms such as BP, Chevron etc. The role involved working at senior levels and leading projects on strategic, technical and scientific projects. She continues to work for OTM on specialist projects today. Passionate about supporting clear and effective technical communications, Jessica established Emphasis, a specialist marketing and event management agency, in 2012. Emphasis works exclusively within the science and technology sectors. The team work with Universities, science, energy and technology brands to develop effective and strategic marketing campaigns. |

I studied for a Masters in Chemistry at Southampton undertaking three research projects for; Prof. Jeremy Frey, Prof. A. Ganesan and Prof. R.C.D. Brown. I stayed on at Southampton where I completed a PhD covering both methodology and total synthesis winning the Eli Lilly Post-graduate symposium competition. After University I joined Kelly Services in October 2012 working as a contract research chemistry on-site at Eli Lilly conducting research alongside Lilly chemists. I changed employer in September 2014 and began working for AMRI global, still on site at Lilly working as a contract research Chemist.
