Event details

Dr Weng Kee Leong presents a seminar as part of the Molecular, Assembly, Functrion and Structure Groups Semianr Series.

The study of organometallic clusters, particularly of the element osmium, originated from the 1960’s and saw its heyday in the 70’s through to the 90’s. The turn of the century saw a slow decline in interests as the pioneers of the field went into retirement, and younger researchers went into other “hot” research areas. Having carried out my supervised research in the 80’s and 90’s, and my own independent research starting from the mid-90’s, I have witnessed this turn of events and have remained fascinated with organometallic clusters.
In this talk, I will describe the work of my group on metal carbonyl cluster chemistry, based primarily on osmium, from synthesis and structural studies through attempts at applications in the biomedical and nanomaterial sciences.
