Event details

Professor Lesley Yellowlees worked with the Royal Society of Chemistry, latterly as President and is the Head of Chemistry at Edinburgh, who received their Gold Athena Swan award in 2015.

Chemistry, in common with all other STEM subjects, has significant problems with equality and diversity in its practitioners. Gender issues have been the focus of much attention - driven in part by the Athena Swan initiative with the Race Charter now highlighting other areas of non-inclusion. Nearly 50% of undergraduate students are female but less than 10% of Professors are and a BME student is significantly less likely than a white British student to get a 1st or 2:i degree classification. The lecture will explore such diversity issues, present personal observations and seek discussion within the inclusivity debate.
