The Denis Henry PhD Scholarship is awarded to one PhD student per year who has the potential to achieve exceptional quality research.
The scholarship programme was established in memory of Denis Henry Desty, who was a chemistry student at Southampton in the 1940s. He went on to become a pioneer in the fields of chromatography and combustion science.
The Scholarship has a total value of £11,000, which will normally be divided as follows:
One Denis Henry Desty PhD Scholarship will be awarded each year. We will invite eligible candidates to apply for the scholarship (via an online application form) during October in the first year of their PhD in the School of Chemistry at Southampton.
Applications will be considered by a panel and shortlisted students will be interviewed. The interview panel will consider the following criteria when deciding which student should receive the scholarship:
Each scholarship recipient will provide a brief, annual progress report to demonstrate the impact of the scholarship. After graduating, scholars will provide a final progress report to reflect on how the award has made an impact on their studies. Scholars will also be invited to an annual reception, which will be an opportunity to meet the family of Denis Henry Desty and to keep in touch with other scholars.
The British Council’s Education UK website includes a range of helpful information for international candidates.
