Hi, I'm Edward Jager and I studied PhD within Chemistry at the University of Southampton.

I find my research topic really interesting given the unique challenges that laser-based imaging poses and the insights that it can provide.

After completing my undergraduate MChem degree here in Southampton with a 6-month placement at GSK Worthing, I decided to pursue a PhD. My placement equipped me with the skills required to continue on with my career as a researcher in addition to being a lot of fun. I decided to continue with my studies at a postgraduate level because I love the challenge and thrill of research.

Personal drive is very important for prospective PhD students and my advice to anyone considering doing a PhD is to find a topic you are excited about. Your enjoyment of your field is what motivates you to get up in the morning. I find my research topic really interesting given the unique challenges that laser-based imaging poses and the insights that it can provide.

I love studying here in Southampton because of all the opportunities beyond my research. Outside of the research lab, I am currently the PhD representative of ChemSoc and a regular user of the bouldering room. I have been involved in the UCAS days in presenting my experience of my placement. My plan for when I graduate is to secure a post-doc place and eventually work my way up the academic ladder to professorship.
