Hi, I'm Michael Palmer and I studied PhD within Chemistry at the University of Southampton.

My area of research is within Lithium-ion technology, focusing on high-voltage cathode materials

After completing the Chemistry Master’s programme at Southampton, the decision to pursue a Postgraduate degree here as well was an easy one. The university provides excellent opportunities, facilities and services to a full range of students.

Southampton has many industry links within research, which led to me gaining a full Industrial CASE EPSRC studentship, supported by QinetiQ. This opportunity allows access to industrial training, facilities and expertise, allowing for a mutually beneficial research collaboration between academic and partner organisations.

Southampton has an established world-class reputation in electrochemistry research. My area of research is within Lithium-ion technology, focusing on high-voltage cathode materials. This involves the synthesis, characterisation and testing of a variety of different materials, optimising the processes involved to achieve maximum performance.

I am involved in the Southampton Electrochemistry Summer School, which invites students and company employed peers from around the world to learn about the application of modern electrochemical techniques to problems in materials science.  The program has been running since 1969 and is an excellent way to promote your own research and network with scientists within your research field.

My future career plans are to stay within my research field, potentially moving into industryor to become a Post Doctorate here at Southampton.
