Mass Spectrometry

The Mass Spectrometry service has developed a strong research support function for clients, both internal and external to the University.

The Mass Spectrometry and Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry facility provides an essential research support function for clients, both internal and external to the University.

Mass spectrometry involves the study of matter through the formation of gas phase ions that are characterised by their mass, charge, structure and/or physio-chemical properties. Typical classes of compounds that are analysed by mass spectrometry cover a wide range of chemical space, including small gaseous molecules, small molecules, biomolecules, synthetic polymers and inorganics.

The facility focuses on organic/bio-organics mass spectrometry and provides several open access mass spectrometers together with application-specific instruments and techniques to support researchers across the University. The facility also specialises in separation techniques and the application of hyphenated approaches e.g. GC-MS, GCxGC-MS, HPLC-MS and SFC-MS.

Additional research-specific instruments are used as part of the mass spectrometry research group under the supervision of Professor John Langley.

The facility has built up a varied external client portfolio, with clients from the pharmaceutical, chemical and oilfield industries, small and medium enterprises, custom synthesis houses, government agencies, universities and many more. The facility offers a wide range of state-of-the-art mass spectrometry and chromatography systems that can deal with many different sample types and applications.
