Research project: Harrowven: First Total Synthesis of 1-Desoxyhypnophilin

Our group were the first to effect a total synthesis of (±)-1-desoxyhypnophilin, a triquinane from the East African mushroom Lentinus crinitus exhibiting useful antimicrobial activity.

The key step showed that allylic alcohols were compatible with Grubbs’ ring closing metathesis reaction providing a simple and high yielding route to cyclopentenols and cyclopentenones.
