Research project: Russell: Oxygen electrocatalysis

Currently Active:
Yes

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) often limits the performance of fuel cells and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of growing interest for its application in water electrolysers and rechargeable metal-air batteries.

Project Overview

Additionally the ORR is used in gas sensors. My group is investigating a variety of candidate electrocatalysts for both reactions. The work is done in collaboration with a variety of industrial partners: fuel cell cathodes (Johnson Matthey), water electrolysers (ITM Power), reversible oxygen electrodes (POWAIR consortium led by C-Tech Innovations), gas sensors (City Technology).
