Professor William Levason is Professor Emeritus within Chemistry at the University of Southampton.

Researcher IDC  3059-2009

Bill Levason received a B.Sc. (1st class Hons) from UMIST in 1970. He remained there to study for a Ph.D developing the coordination chemistry of bidentate antimony containing ligands, graduating in 1975. He was appointed to a Lecturership in Inorganic Chemistry at Southampton in 1976, being promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1987. He became a Reader in 1994 and was made Professor of Inorganic Chemistry in 1999. He retired in December 2013 and is currently Emeritus Professor.

Bill’s research interests are in synthetic inorganic chemistry and include the design and coordination of neutral bi- and multi-dentate ligands containing heavy group 15 and 16 donor atoms (P, As, Sb, Bi, Se and Te), transition metal coordination chemistry, especially in high oxidation states, and metal halide and oxo-halide chemistry. More recently main group (p-block) coordination chemistry and the applications of main group complexes as precursors for the chemical vapour deposition of electronic materials (semi-conductors etc.) has become a major theme. The coordination chemistry of metal and non-metal fluorides is also being developed, both from the point of view of fundamental chemistry, and also involving the design of new agents for 18-F incorporation into radiopharmaceuticals.

Bill has published 1 book, 40review articles and over 500 research papers.

He is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the American Chemical Society.
