Placement experience: Jack Hardwick

Placement at McGill University in Montreal Canada

I studied for a Foundation Year in Biology Chemistry and Maths before starting on the MChem. It was a major change of career as I hadn’t studied sciences at school. Originally I wanted to be a guitar teacher but realised it wasn’t the right career choice for me. The Foundation Year really helped with the transition and I enjoyed it so much I want to stay in education and take a PhD.

For my placement, I went to McGill University in Montreal Canada, working in two areas – DNA nanotechnology and single molecule spectroscopy. It was an amazing experience both academically and socially.

Thinking about the highlights, I was very lucky to get into this field of work and also lucky to be based in this incredible city. When I arrived there was a jazz band playing in the arrivals hall and there was a jazz festival underway at the time, it was a great introduction to the place.
