By choosing to study chemistry at Southampton, you will have the opportunity to undertake an exciting and challenging combination of theory, applications and practical work, with opportunities for placements and work experience in industry.
Studying for an MChem degree at Southampton gave chemistry undergraduate student Jenny Burt the opportunity to work abroad.
She spent six months in Antwerp working in the Chemical Process Development Laboratory of the international company Agfa-Gevaert Group. Now back home, she has written up the experience for her final year dissertation and will showcase her findings in a poster exhibition with fellow MChem students.
“My time in Belgium gave me new laboratory techniques and skills, building on what I had learned at Southampton. I found it improved my confidence as a scientist. While there, I worked on synthesizing one particular chemical and was asked to make presentations to staff,” says Jenny.
Settling in to a new country was not difficult, according to Jenny: “People were welcoming and everyone spoke English at Agfa, there were also plenty of interns from several countries at the company. My placement has given me a good insight into what it’s like to work in industry and helped me see chemistry from the other side.”
After graduation, Jenny intends to study for a PhD, but she has not ruled out returning to industry in future.
