Paul’s work in the University began as an educator and researcher in Ocean and Earth Sciences, which led to designing and delivering educational experiences in a wide range of scenarios, increasingly requiring the use of technology. Originally from a physics background, his role evolved from specialisation within paleomagnetism and shallow marine geoscience into academic staff development, elearning pedagogy and its evaluation.

Paul is CHEP lead for the Higher Education Academy (HEA) accredited programmes, including the Post Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) for new staff, and the PREP Framework for established staff. Paul’s work is driven by a curiosity about the diverse ways in which people learn and how their learning may be enhanced. He has published on research and development activities in the areas of design and evaluation of blended learning environments and frameworks for academic staff development.

Paul co-ordinated the NETTLE (Network of European Tertiary Level Educators) EU Thematic Network project (completed in 2008) and has been a local manager/ co-ordinating partner in numerous in EU and UK funded TEL projects since 1997.  Paul is currently external examiner for two accredited programmes, a reviewer for ALT C and is a Senior Fellow of the HEA.
