Encouraging Engagement in Lectures

Encouraging Engagement in Lectures

Target Audience: Academic Staff

Brief Outline: This workshop aims to provide a forum for new and experienced lecturers who wish to develop their lecturing skills and practice and review the form and function of lectures within their courses. Lectures, as a method of teaching and learning, have been criticised for encouraging students to be passive and encourage surface learning; however, this need not be the case. This workshop will explore ways in which lecturers can be designed and structured to foster engagement and deeper learning and consider how elements of class interaction can be fostered and managed effectively.

The workshop includes presentations from the tutor and a wide range of individual and group based activities to consider how to handle your material, your students and yourself in the large lecture.
