Event details

Leadership is often thought of mistakenly as something that only senior academic or research staff are engaged in. This misconception is happening at a time when there is an ever-increasing call for strong leadership during current periods of uncertainty and an vast array of literature from books to articles and videos, which all clamour to describe their good ideas for successful leadership and they how might be delivered. In my experience, providing good leadership can enrich you as an individual and your personal relationships, as well as your professional ones. I will present examples from my personal leadership journey that show those aspects of leadership that have worked or not worked based upon my experience, to make the case for leadership as a collective responsibility, which should happen at all levels of an academic institution to build a successful and supportive environment underpinned by a healthy and integrity-driven culture. I will describe some of the key skills and personal values I believe to be transferable that helped me to manage and lead effectively in various roles at the University, alongside other voluntary external roles related to professional institutions, my national academic portfolio and the demonstration of academic leadership. This is not a recipe for successful leadership but rather sharing experience from a personal perspective and the talk will be of interest to junior and mid-career academics, as well as researchers who are thinking about a future balanced academic career or those keen to hear more about leadership concepts more widely.
