Personal academic tutoring and student support

Session Overview: This session will explore the roles of Personal academic tutor and Senior tutor. Issues of confidentiality, boundaries and the importance of creating a safe environment will be discussed. Participants will have the opportunity to practice appropriate listening techniques, self reflect on their current practice and identify future development needs in this area.

This session is offered as part of the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice.

Please note that it is not possible to attend this session unless you are completing the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP).  To reserve a place on a PGCAP course (where you will attend all the module 1 and module 2 sessions) please email Karen Hockley (K.A.Hockley@soton.ac.uk).

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the session you should be able to:

  • describe the characteristics of a communication space, a “safe space to talk it through”
  • identify strategies for establishing personal boundaries when working as a Personal academic tutor
  • discuss approaches to working with students with a difficulty
  • identify where/who to go to for help regarding a student with a difficulty
