LI Jia has successfully completed her four-year work placement at the Confucius Institute, University of Southampton
Jia has a MA in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics at Xiamen University, China. She joined the Confucius Institute (CI) at the University of Southampton in October 2014 and based at Bohunt School. As the Mandarin teacher, her main responsibilities were to deliver the Chinese language and cultural lessons at Bohunt School and outreach schools. She also supported the CI in the delivery of events showcasing aspects of Chinese Culture. Her duties included:
Teaching Key Stage 3 Chinese at Bohunt School
Co-teaching Key Stage 4 (GCSE) Chinese at Bohunt school
Co-teaching Content and Language integrated Learning (CLIL) Drama, Art, PE with relevant subject teachers at Bohunt School
Organizing and Invigilating HSK Proficiency Tests at Bohunt School
Training and accompanying students to attend HSBC/ British Council Speaking Competition
Teaching 1-2-1 Chinese students for SEN students at Bohunt School
Writing news release for Bohunt School
Assisting Bohunt China Project, interpreting and translating for school
Delivering workshops, like paper cutting, tea art, ink painting etc. at Bohunt School and outreach schools
Delivering Chinese cultural events in CI and local schools
Preparing the Presentations for CI Chinese Teacher teaching and researching meetings.
Apart from focusing on teaching, Jia was interested in the research on CLIL Chinese teaching. She submitted a paper and did a presentation on this topic which summarized her four-year teaching and researching, at the 14th BAAL Language Learning and Teaching SIG Conference.
After leaving CI, Jia will do her PGCE teacher training at Goldsmiths University of London and Bohunt School.
