On 13th March 2019, the Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton held its first seminar of the Lunchtime Talks at the Avenue Campus. Dr Ruby Cheung from Film Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities talked on Contemporary East Asian Film Business Network: Chinese-speaking Nodes.

In her presentation, Dr Cheung put forward the features of the film industries in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan from a historical perspective.  She scrutinised the latest development of these film industries, as manifested by their high concentration in Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Taipei. She argued that understanding their multi-layering and multi-dimensional relationships in contemporary era would help further appreciation of the trajectory of world cinema at large.

Around 20 audience attended the lunch talk and the Q&A session. This seminar offered a great opportunity for students and staff to a better understanding of the contemporary history of Chinese-speaking region and the background of film industries in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
