On 4th May 2019, sponsored by Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton (CI Soton), Mediating ‘China’: PhD Symposium of Visual Representations of the People, Traditions and Spaces of Chinese-speaking Communities - was held by the Centre for International Film Research at the University of Southampton (UoS). Around 40 PhD students from across the UK and further afield attended the symposium.

Professor Lucy Mazdon, Professor in Film at UoS and Dr Ying Zheng, Director of CI Soton made the welcome and introductory speeches. 12 presentations from five universities - Nottingham, Liverpool, York, UCL and Southampton, were given on Transnational Chinese-language Media and Contents, Chinese Cinematic Languages and Visual Representations, as well as Chinese Screens and Visual Arts. Professor Tim Bergfelder from University of Southampton, Dr Julian Stringer from University of Nottingham, and Professor Stephanie Hemelryk Donald from University of Lincoln were invited as the panel discussants.

 This symposium explored how the spaces, identities, languages, people, and traditions of various Chinese-speaking communities have been visualised and represented in a variety of visual media. From cinema and video games to television and other art forms, this symposium offered an excellent platform in promoting comprehensive and interdisciplinary insight not only into the Chinese visual culture itself, but also into the eclectic range of innovative research methods and critical approaches. The later have been employed to the study and analysis of the culture along with their development and integration with the world amidst globalisation and current affairs as well as international relations.
