How to Prevent Hate Crime

On 23rd April 2020, an online workshop via Zoom regarding understanding and how to prevent hate crime was organised and conducted by a leading hate crime prevention charity – protection Approaches for Chinese & Student Communities.

Miss Zhang Die, a Chinese language teacher from Xiamen, attended the workshop representing the Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton and the local schools in the area.  More than 50 participants came from all walks of life took part in the event. Contents lectured and discussed including 1)the Hate crime laws, 2)the difference between hate crimes and hate incidents, 3)the impact of hate crime on victims, 4)witnesses, and communities, 5)how and where people can report and 6)why it is important to report.


With the COVID-19 affecting all over the world, many Chinese people and even Asians have suffered different levels of discrimination and even hatred. During this difficult time, such a public lecture and workshop helped the Chinese people who live in the UK to better protect themselves and to feel stronger about being the global citizens.
