On 27th November 2020, the teacher training session of the Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton (CI) was held online via Teams. The British Director, Chinese Director, the core teacher, teachers from Hanban, and volunteers of CI attended the training session.

CI teachers introduced their approaches to integrating Chinese language teaching with cultural events at each school and shared their effective teaching methods and useful resources used to make teaching vivid and enjoyable. The overarching aims are to get students energetically engaged in classroom activities and make learning in practice. Ms. Li encouraged teachers to get students engaged themselves by playing games. Ms. Wu recommended making up stories and painting with innovative thinking to learn the Chinese language and Chinese culture as well. Ms. Chen thought it would be more effective and time saving if teachers could schedule the course contents with the future celebration performance of festivals. Six principles were summarised by Ms. Zhang to guide teachers to enhance professional teaching. Volunteers suggested boosting publicity of CI via the expansion of multimedia (e.g. Tik Tok) and the establishment of CI branded cultural events. The session provided a good opportunity for teachers to learn from each other and make an improvement in their teaching.

To close the teacher training session, Ruoling Zheng, the Chinese Director, commented on CI teachers’ excellent teaching methods and gave suggestions on further teacher professional training and expectations on the development of CI. Ying Zheng, the British Director, said: “Teachers should be able to ‘implement’ their practical ‘Ideas’ with consideration of the ‘Impact’. It is essential to ensure the replicability of the events carried out regarding the restriction of reality.”
