On 14th February 2021, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. BST, The Confucius Institute (CI) at the University of Southampton co-hosted two virtual Spring Festival celebrations respectively with the Chinese Association of Southampton and UK Shaolin to welcome the year of Ox.
To begin, alongside Professor Michael Ng, President of the Chinese Association of Southampton and Yan Min Chen, the Director of UK Shaolin, Sue Blatchford, the Mayor of Southampton, Professor Alex Neil, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton, Dr. Ying Zheng, Director of the CI, and people from all walks of life gave their New Year’s wishes to everyone.
As well as the wide variety of programmes such as Dragon and Lion dances, Martial Arts and Tai Chi Performances, Chinese Opera and dance performances, CI also provided three exciting programmes for the two events. The programmes consisted of a diabolo demonstration, a Hulusi performance and a poetry recitation, which was performed by a CI teacher, an overseas volunteer and a student from Southampton university.
Thousands of viewers at home and abroad enjoyed the events via Zoom or YouTube channels, and many of them were touched by the performances, leaving fantastic massages to say thank you for bringing them “a joyous and festive atmosphere” in this uneasy but unique time.
