Seminar series 1: Chinese Audio-Visual Cultures: The Interaction between China and the Rest of the World
On 7th May, the seminar “Chinese Audio-Visual Cultures: The Interaction between China and the Rest of the World” was held online by the Film Studies department of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Southampton
The Confucius Institute sponsored this event and its director presented and gave a warm speech. “It is wonderful to see the world through other people’s eyes to enrich our lives; it even more wonderful to listen to young scholars exploring Chinese audio-visual arts to help us understand China and Chinese culture even more,” Dr. Ying Zheng said. During the seminar, scholars from different institutes, including the University of Southampton, Bournemouth University, the University of Edinburgh, King’s College London, Glasgow University, and Nottingham University discussed Chinese cultural identity in film and other audio-visual mediums, Chinese Culture presented in Chinese and western painting, the audio-visual culture embodied in transnational boat collection exhibitions, the audio-visual industries in China and cultural polices in China. These topics sparked several rounds of discussion about differences in audio-visual culture between China and the rest of the world. Attendees found the seminar thought-provoking and inspiring. The Confucius Institute is pleased to have sponsored this event and welcomes future seminars on China and Chinese culture.
