On May 12th, 2021, the "32 Form" Taichi course sponsored by the Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton and taught by Professor Huang Songjun was successfully concluded

This 12-week Taichi class started on the 24th February 2021. The Confucius Institute specially invited Professor Huang Songjun, a professor in the School of Electronics and Computer Science in University of Southampton, to be the course instructor. Professor Huang led participants in learning and practising Taichi over Zoom. Professor Huang patiently and carefully explained the key points and techniques of each move. Many staff members and students followed Professor Huang step by step while watching their screens. This special experience of learning Tai Chi has been meaningful and memorable for all the participants.

Faced with the challenge of COVID-19, most people have been spending time studying and working at home. The World Health Organization suggests that people of different abilities and at all ages should stick to exercise at home as much as possible. During this unusual period, Taichi, which does not require any equipment or a large space to practise, has gradually become the first choice for many people to keep healthy. Chinese Taichi was added to the UNESCO human intangible cultural heritage representative list in 2020. The Confucius Institute’s free online Taichi course has helped Taichi enthusiasts systematically learn the exercises and provided a social platform for residents lacking personal contact to maintain social interaction during this unprecedented time. Moreover, this activity has helped to spread and share excellent traditional Chinese culture and contributed to the integration of Eastern and Western cultures.
