On July 5th, 2021, the 18th International Conference on Teaching and Learning Chinese in Higher Education was held online. The theme of this year's conference was "Teaching Chinese as an International Language in the Time of COVID: Opportunities, Innovations and Development", and was organized by the British Chinese Language Teaching Society (BCLTS) and hosted and co-organized by the Confucius Institute, Bangor University.

There were 6 keynote speeches and 12 sub-forums at the conference. Two teachers, Miss Die Zhang and Dr. Ying Zheng who is the director of Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton, submitted papers to the conference and made a report. This report explores the assessment literacy of Mandarin Chinese teachers who are working at Confucius Institutes (CI) in the UK. Analysis of the data collected from questionnaires and interviews designed to investigate the assessment literacy of participants, indicated that the level of assessment literacy among CI Mandarin Chinese teachers differs from that of local Modern Foreign Language (MFL) teachers.

The British Chinese Language Teaching Society is a non-profit academic organization composed of Chinese language teachers from British universities. Its main function is to help Chinese language teachers at British universities to improve their teaching level and research capability in Chinese as a second language. The 15th annual meeting was hosted by the Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton in 2017.
