On 18th November 2021, the third webinar in the 'Discovering China' series was held by the Confucius Institute (CI) at the University of Southampton. Dr Ying Zheng, the English Director of CI, hosted the session.

Mr Kang gave an excellent lecture on ‘World Heritage Sites in China and The Great Wall’. More than 30 teachers and students from the School of Humanities listened to Mr Kang’s talk. The talk introduced 8 world heritage sites in China and, in particular, the Great Wall. He started off with a detailed description of the history and legends surrounding the Great Wall. He then introduced the present of the Great Wall from the aspects of culture and tourism. Finally, Mr Kang talked about the protection of the Great Wall and inspired everyone to think about how people should protect it in the future. Due to the impact of COVID-19, the talk was hosted remotely by Mr Kang from China. He will be coming to the UK soon to work for the CI.

The 40-minute webinar provided participants with up-to-date information about the Great Wall. During the question and answer session, the audience and Mr Kang discussed the topics of maintenance of the Great Wall, whether people today can step on the Great Wall and whether tourists can take away the bricks of the Great Wall as souvenirs. Afterwards, the teachers and students left messages thanking Mr Kang for his interesting talk.
