The Nanquan Course Completed Successfully
The 10-week Nanquan course, run by the Confucius Institute and Chinese Association of Southampton, was completed on 7th December 2022. Prof Michael Ng, professor of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering School of Southampton University and President of the Southampton Chinese Association, taught this course.
Nanquan, or Southern- Fist, refers to a classification of Chinese martial arts that originated from the south of the Yangtze River in China. The southern styles of Chinese martial arts are characterized by emphasis on short hitting and specific arm movements. It involves vigorous and athletic movements with very stable and low stances. Together with extensive hand techniques and vocal shouting.
In each weekly one hour session, Michael would lead everyone to warm-up to prevent muscle strain, and then teach each posture and move patiently with detailed guidance. After each class, Michael would send relevant video clips in the online group.
In response to the high praise and requests for more courses of this type, CI has made plans to run or sponsor more martial arts courses in the future. Please stay tuned for more updates.
