Chinese New Year Celebration Events
On January 21st and 22nd, the Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton organized two Chinese New Year Celebration events in collaboration with the Chinese Association and the UK Shaolin at Mayflower Studios and Westquay Shopping Centre.
To celebrate the Chinese New Year, the Confucius Institute arranged four workshops: Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting, Chinese zodiac coloring, and clay rabbits making, which were eagerly participated in. Additionally, a question-and-answer activity on Chinese knowledge was also conducted. During the event, the mayor of Southampton and her husband attended and tried their hand at writing Chinese characters using a brush pen.
The Spring Festival event attracted over 30,000 people from the local area and surrounding cities, with a 5.4% increase in participation compared to last year, according to Westquay statistics. Approximately 3,000 visitors participated in the workshops organized by the Confucius Institute. The successful hosting of the Spring Festival event not only allowed the local Chinese and overseas students to experience the joy of the Chinese New Year, but also provided an excellent opportunity for the British people to understand Chinese society and experience its culture.
