The Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton, with the support from UK Association for Language Testing and Assessment (UKALTA) and British Council is going to organise a one-day symposium on the topic of “The Journey of Testing: Global and Local Narratives” on 5th November, 2019 at Garden Court, Highfield Campus, University of Southampton.
The keynote speaker talks cover the following topics:
Exploring the Legacy of the Chinese Imperial Examinations
30 years of testing in the UK- back to the future?
Social Elite and Imperial Examination System: A Silk-road Perspective
Imperial Examination and Culture Transmission: A Case Study of Jiading, Shanghai
Call for symposium proposals:
The symposium aims at sharing and exploring different narratives of how tests have been developed, adapted, used and interpreted in different countries around the globe. Participants are expected to share and explore the historical movements of tests and their social political impacts across different contexts.
We invite postgraduate students, educators, researchers and testers to submit abstracts for presentations or posters. The submission deadline is 11th October 2019. Please visit http://testingsymp.com/ for more information. Any queries, please email info@journeyoftesting.com.
Museum Exhibitions:
Together with this symposium, there will be two special exhibitions from Nanjing Imperial Examination Museum and Jiading Museum Shanghai. The exhibition will take place on Avenue Campus on 6th and 7th November in Southampton, and then at the Exchange Exhibition on 9th November at King’s College London.
Both the symposium and exhibitions are free to the public. All are welcome and we look forward to seeing many of you in Southampton or London!
