The Chinese partner for our Confucius Institute is Xiamen University. Founded in 1921 and located in the port city of Xiamen in south-east China, Xiamen is a comprehensive University of international renown.

Our two Universities have contacts that stretch back over many years and we work together on a number of projects involving diverse academic disciplines.  We have strong research collaborations with Xiamen's State Key Labs in Chemistry and Oceanography and we are currently working to strengthen our relationship with biological science.

In 2011 we held a Tripartite Symposium in Xiamen bringing together experts form both Universities in these three fields.  Each year professors from Southampton visit Xiamen to deliver a summer school programme in Electrochemistry.

Our links are not limited to the sciences, we have a collaborative Masters programme in Education which brings around 10 students to Southampton each year and we also receive visiting students who come to study in Social Sciences and Humanities.

The establishment of the Confucius Institute has been very important in consolidating our partnership and will provide us with a sound platform to extend our joint work to other areas.  Xiamen is one of China's most active supporters of the Confucius Institute project internationally with a total of 14 worldwide including 8 in Europe and we are delighted to count ourselves as part of that network
