We have staff from varied backgrounds who all bring their own experience and strengths to the team.

Dr Ying ZHENG, Director

Ying is the UK Director of the Confucius Institute. She is also an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities. Before joining the University of Southampton in 2013, Ying worked as a Psychometrician and Director of Research (2009-2013) in the Language Testing Division of Pearson, London, a world leading multinational education company. She obtained her MEd (2005) and PhD (2009) in Cognitive Studies from Queen's University, Canada, specializing in Second Language Testing and Assessment. Dr Ruoling ZHENG, Chinese Director

Dr Ruoling Zheng is the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute and also a Professor of the Institute of Education at Xiamen University, China. Dr Zheng had been a visiting scholar at Columbia University, University of Notre Dame and Wake Forest University in the USA. She obtained her PhD (2006) from Xiamen University, China, specialising in the history of China's Higher Education and recently her research focuses on College Entrance Examinations in modern China and Imperial Examinations in ancient China. Ms. Ying FU, CI Core teacher

Ying is the Core Teacher of the Confucius Institute and also a Senior Teaching Fellow in Modern Languages at the University of Southampton. She has worked in the UK higher education sector for 18 years before joining the UoS in 2016. The universities and institutions she has worked for include Imperial College London (2014-2016), King’s College London (2007-2013), Foreign and Commonwealth Office (2003-2007), University of Cambridge (2000-2003) and University of Westminster (2013-2014, 1998-2000). Ying obtained her MA in Bilingual Translation at the University of Westminster in 1998 and PG Diploma in TESL at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand in 1990. Her specialities and research interests are in the area of teaching Chinese as a foreign language and translation.

Ms. Min CHEN, CI Chinese Teacher

Min Chen obtained her Master’s degree from Xiamen University, majoring in Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language. She worked as a Mandarin teacher in 8 local schools in Somerset from 2015 to 2017. She joined CI University of Southampton as a qualified Mandarin teacher in September and mainly deliver Mandarin lesson in Frome schools, Somerset.

 Ms. Die Zhang, CI Chinese Teacher

Die Zhang received her Bachelor’s degree from Beijing Language and Culture University in 2011, majoring in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. She obtained her Master degree in Language Acquisition from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2013. Before she joined CI at University of Southampton as a qualified Mandarin teacher in August 2019, she worked as a University lecturer in Xiamen University, China for three years and as a CI Chinese teacher in Cardiff University, UK for two years. Her main responsibilities are to deliver Chinese teaching and run workshops in CI at University of Southampton.

Ms. Peie Wu, CI Chinese Teacher

Peie received her Bachelor’s degree from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in 2014, majoring in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. She worked as a Chinese teacher in Sun Yat-sen University for 3 years and she joined CI University of Southampton as a qualified Mandarin teacher in September 2018. Her main responsibilities are to deliver Chinese teaching  in Bohunt School.

Miss Yun Li, CI Chinese Teacher

Yun Li obtained her Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages at Chongqing University in 2015. Before joining CI, She worked as a Mandarin teacher in an International school, Beijing. She joined CI University of Southampton as a qualified Mandarin teacher in October,2018.
