 Dr Ying ZHENG, Director

Ying is the UK Director of the Confucius Institute. She is also an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities. Before joining the University of Southampton in 2013, Ying worked as a Psychometrician and Director of Research (2009-2013) in the Language Testing Division of Pearson, London, a world leading multinational education company. She obtained her MEd (2005) and PhD (2009) in Cognitive Studies from Queen's University, Canada, specializing in Second Language Testing and Assessment. Dr. Fang ZHOU, CI Chinese Director

Fang received her doctor's degree of philology from Beijing University in 2006. She has worked as a lecturer at Jilin University from 1993 to 2002, as a project manager at CI headquarters from 2002 to 2005, as a senior editor at Higher Education Press from 2006 to 2014, and then worked as a teaching resources designer at the Open University of China from 2014 to 2016. Her specialties include research of Mandarin Chinese grammar, Chinese teaching as a foreign language, Chinese teaching resources development, and teacher training.

 Ms. Ying FU, CI Core teacher

Ying is the Core Teacher of the Confucius Institute and also a Senior Teaching Fellow in Modern Languages at the University of Southampton. She has worked in the UK higher education sector for 18 years before joining the UoS in 2016. The universities and institutions she has worked for include Imperial College London (2014-2016), King’s College London (2007-2013), Foreign and Commonwealth Office (2003-2007), University of Cambridge (2000-2003) and University of Westminster (2013-2014, 1998-2000). Ying obtained her MA in Bilingual Translation at the University of Westminster in 1998 and PG Diploma in TESL at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand in 1990. Her specialities and research interests are in the area of teaching Chinese as a foreign language and translation.

Ms. Cuihua MA, CI Chinese teacher

Cuihua received her Master’s Degree of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics from the Communication University of China. She used to work as a Chinese teacher at Saint Francis Xavier Convent School, Assumption Commercial College in Thailand and Yew Chung International School of Beijing. She is now working for Xiamen University Southern Base of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and was sent to the University of Southampton Confucius Institute to work as a Chinese teacher from Sept 2016.

Ms. Jia LI, CI Chinese teacher

Jia has a Master in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics from Xiamen University, China. Her research mainly focused on TCSL and Contrastive Linguistics. Jia worked in the Confucius Institute at University of Wroclaw, Poland from 2012 to 2013, and also taught Intermediate Chinese in the University. She was also in charge of Elementary Listening courses in Overseas Education College at Xiamen University from 2013 to 2014. Jia has worked in Southampton CI since October 2014. She is currently teaching in the Confucius Classroom at Bohunt School and in charge of Chinese Immersion, GCSE courses etc.

Mr Yu LIAO, CI Chinese Teacher

Yu obtained his Master of Education in Teaching Practice and Innovation in 2013 from the University of Southampton. He then joined the Confucius Institute as a Hanban Teacher in the year of 2014. The majority of his responsibility is to deliver Mandarin courses to 15 schools in the Project Somerset. As one of the two main tutors, he has been working with a wide variety of schools and colleges all over Somerset. His area of work covers GCSE Chinese, HSK for adults and Chinese for beginners and cultural workshops. In addition to his teaching role, he works closely with the project manager to help develop the Project Somerset.

Ms. Yilin YE, CI  Chinese Volunteer Teacher

Yili’s research direction is about Sinology. She used to teach Introduction to China in Medicine College in Xiamen University from 2015 to 2016. Yilin is currently working at Confucius Classroom at Bohunt School as a Volunteer Chinese Teacher.

Ms. Shihan LIN, CI Chinese Volunteer Teacher

Shihan majored in Chinese Language and Literature in her undergraduate years. Now she is a postgraduate student in Beijing Normal University for her Master's degree, majoring in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. Shihan joined CI University of Southampas a volunteer Chinese teacher in September, 2017.


Ms. Siqi YANG, CI Chinese Teacher

Siqi received her Bachelor’s degree from South China Normal University in 2014, majoring in English Education. She worked as an English teacher in a primary school for 3 years and she joined CI University of Southampton as a qualified Mandarin teacher in September 2017. Her main responsibilities are to deliver Chinese teaching and run workshops in 8 local schools in Somerset area.

Ms. Li PAN, CI Chinese Teacher

Li obtained her Master’s degree in 2013 from JiLin University in China, majoring in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language to Foreigners. She worked in Ateneo de Davao University in the Philippines as a volunteer Mandarin teacher from 2012 to 2013 and taught Chinese in a high school in China from 2014 to 2016. Her currently responsibility is to deliver Mandarin courses in Somerset schools.


 Ms. Hongjing LI, CI Chinese Teacher

Hongjing received her Bachelor’s degree from Southwest University in 2014, majoring in Chinese Language and Literature. She worked as a Chinese teacher in a primary school for 3 years and joined CI University of Southampton as a qualified Mandarin teacher in September 2017. Her main responsibility is to teach Mandarin in Somerset schools.
