The Care Life Cycle

The UK's population is ageing and, given that older people are the major users of health and social care services, this presents a major challenge for policymakers. As well as increasing the demand for care, population ageing is affecting the supply of care professionals, as the health workforce itself ages.

This research programme was the first to deal comprehensively with the factors affecting both the supply and demand of health and social care. A suite of innovative Care Life Cycle modelling tools were developed incorporating these factors and the expert opinions of our stakeholders, informing the development of social policy for the benefit of our society.

Research Centres

Academics from four of the University's leading international research centres worked together to achieve these aims:

Centre for Research on Ageing (CRA)

ESRC Centre for Population Change (CPC)

Centre for Operational Research, Management Science and Information Systems (CORMSIS)

Institute for Complex Systems Simulations (ICSS)

The research programme was directed by Professor Jane Falkingham (Demography), Professor Sally Brailsford (Management Science), Professor Seth Bullock (Complexity Science) and Professor Maria Evandrou (Gerontology).
