Zainab Ottun is a Mathematics with Physics graduate from Southampton University, who, having decided to go into Engineering, is all set to do a Masters at Southampton in Mechatronics.

When Zainab learned of the Clean Carbon Summer Internship scheme she jumped at the chance, figuring that it would better prepare her for the transition from maths to engineering.

The issue of Climate Change has always been of great importance to Zainab, so when she found out that this was what the internship was about and that it would allow her to develop key skills necessary in the engineering field, in addition to doing work that could help change laissez-faire attitudes to Climate Change, she couldn’t wait to apply.

Clean Carbon do a lot of outreach work in collaboration with Winchester Science Centre, and Marwell Zoo, and Zainab feels lucky to be working closely with both organisations on their projects linked to Climate Change.  Zainab's internship will last for eight weeks and she will be spending quite a lot of her time with both organisations. Working closely with Dr Lindsay-Marie Armstrong, Chair of the Clean Carbon USRG, Zainab will help provide a clear idea of what Clean Carbon needs to do on two fronts: one; to give Marwell Zoo scientific advice about how to structure the interactive experience planned for their new Tropical House, which is due to open in June 2018; and two; to give Winchester Science Centre a remit for building an interactive Clean Carbon outreach exhibit.

I look forward to carrying out research into how to change attitudes towards Climate Change, and how I can implement the research that I do to design an Interactive 3-D module that will directly educate children, families and policy makers on how society from different fields of work need to come together to keep global warming within 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius!
