Writers in Conversation features some of today’s best fiction writers, poets, non-fiction writers and playwrights reading from their work and talking about their writing lifestyle - how characters take shape and where ideas come from. Led by creative writing lecturers at the University of Southampton, the event takes place in Nuffield Kitchen, helping to create an evening that is relaxed, engaging and intelligent, yet informal.

Alison Fell is a prize-winning Scottish novelist and poet, who has published 8 novels, including  Mer de Glace, The Pillow Boy of the Lady Onogoro (Serpent’s Tail) and Tricks of the Light (Doubleday/Black Swan), and 4 poetry collections, the most recent of which is Lightyear (Smokestack Books). She is a professor of creative writing at the University of Southampton.

Aamer Hussein, a professor of creative writing at the University of Southampton, is a prolific short story writer and critic. His first collection of stories, Mirror to the Sun, was published in 1993. He has since authored five collections of short fiction, most recently Insomnia (2007) and 37 Bridges (2014), and two novels, Another Gulmohar Tree (2009) and The Cloud Messenger (2011), both nominated for prizes. Hussein travels frequently to Pakistan and also writes in Urdu. He is a senior editor of the journal Critical Muslim, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
