Published: 18 June 2008

'Representing the Moral Past', The first Reuter Masterclass for PhD and early career post-doctoral students took place in the School of Humanities, University of Southampton, on 18 June 2008. Six excellent papers were delivered by finishing doctoral and new post-doctoral researchers. This year's winner of the Elsevier prize for the best paper was Barbara Gaspar, a doctoral student at University College London whose wide-ranging paper traced over several centuries the impact and consequences of the controversy over the question of the mode of conception of the Virgin Mary. The workshop was sponsored by Elsevier, publishers of the Journal of Medieval History. Barbara receives from Elsevier a cash prize, and the opportunity to publish her paper in JMH.
