Postgraduate Visit Day 2014 Event

Prospective postgraduate taught (MA) and postgraduate research students are invited to join us for our CMRC Visit Day on Monday 20th January, 2014, which will run in conjunction with our Inter-disciplinary Study Day on the theme of ‘Performative Spaces'. This is an opportunity to learn more about the CMRC, our community and our research. The Visit Day will include a series of presentations and discussions linked to our broad theme of ‘Performative Spaces', lunch with current CMRC students and staff, and an opportunity to see the University's Avenue Campus.

The focus of this year's CMRC Study Day looks ahead to the biennial conference of the Society of Renaissance Studies, which we will host at Southampton in July 2014 on the theme of ‘Performative Spaces'. The Study Day is designed to open up inter-disciplinary conversation across the research specialisms of CMRC members, both staff and students. The keynote presentation will be given by Professor John McGavin (English), whose research interests include the interpretation of primary records of early English and Scottish drama, theatricality in its widest sense, ceremony, and play. Themes for consideration throughout the day will include the relationship between performance and performativity; the relationships between specific performances and specific places and spaces; performativity, physical space, and mental space; continuities and ruptures in the functions of performative spaces over time, from the medieval and renaissance periods through to the present day.  We will explore such themes through a variety of medieval and Renaissance media, from secular dramatic and musical performances to liturgy and religious ritual, through archaeological and architectural evidence, through text, record and image, and combinations of these.

The Visit Day is an opportunity for prospective MA students to discover more about taught programme in the CMRC, and for prospective research students to learn about our postgraduate research programmes, and to meet potential supervisors. The event is timed to help inform and support funding applications via the University's AHRC partnership (The South, West and Wales Consortium) and University of Southampton studentships.
