This paper will explore some aspects of theatre in academies across the Veneto region, including Verona, Vicenza and Padua, besides Venice.  It will explore how far Venice's subject cities negotiated a distinct socio-political identity through their academies and through theatre practised there.  How far were these institutions able to foster local heterodoxy and opposition in light of the drama they produced for print and performance?
