Clinical Neonatal and Developmental Neurosciences Group

About us

The Clinical Neonatal and Developmental Neurosciences Group (CNDNG) investigates relationships between brain development and function in infants born at high risk of altered brain development and subsequent neurodevelopmental impairment. This includes:

  1. Long term neurological and developmental outcomes of infants born preterm and at term with neurological problems, in particular hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) after perinatal asphyxia, and infants with perinatal stroke;
  2. Characterisation of neural correlates of motor and cognitive function in infants with early acquired brain injury and those born preterm, using advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and electroencephalogram (EEG).

Our research is closely linked to clinical practice, with strong translational focus, and is conducted in a in a vibrant multidisciplinary environment.

Our group actively collaborates with colleagues across the University of Southampton, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, and other institutions.

As a group of paediatric researchers at Southampton, we are dedicated to create a welcoming environment for the parents and children in our community, and this includes parental mental health and coping, as well as engaging children into neuroscience research.
