The University of Southampton
Coastal and Offshore Archaeological Research Services (COARS)

Expertise

Our staff at COARS are all recognised experts in their own fields, notably in marine geophysics and geoarchaeology / environmental archaeology. All staff maintain this level of expertise by balancing commercial projects with ongoing research programs, ensuring that high standards of knowledge and methodology are fed into their commercial work.

COARS forms part of the University of Southampton, from which we can draw upon for additional expertise and advice. We are overseen by an advisory board comprised of experts in the schools of Ocean and Earth Science and Archaeology, as well as corporate input from the University itself.

Our staff are involved with  a number of national archaeological advisory panels including English Heritage's Historic Wreck Panel and the delivery of the UK contribution, through regional and local scale sediment transport models, to an EU web based heritage management decision making GIS. Our expertise have been called upon to write English Heritage's Marine Geophysics Data Acquisition, Processing and Interpretation Guidance Notes and the Council for British Archaeology Research Report People and the Sea: A Maritime Archaeological Research Agenda for England
