University of Southampton and the Community

Since gaining full university status by Royal Charter in 1952, the University has become one of the UK’s leading research universities and is recognised internationally as one of the top 100 in the world. In 1964 the town's status was also changed by Royal Charter to that of "city" of Southampton.

The University of Southampton plays an important role in the city and its wider region. We contribute to the region in many ways through our education and research, our business and enterprise links and our volunteering programmes. Our aim is always to build positive relationships with local and regional agencies, to establish strong lines of communication between the University and its local community, and to be a good neighbour.

Many of our staff and students have their homes in Southampton and significant numbers of our alumni also live locally long after graduating. Our campus facilities are popular with large numbers of our neighbours and we warmly welcome those who wish to visit our sports and arts venues.
