MSc summer projects

Tackling real business issues through MSc projects

Each summer all CORMSIS Masters students have the opportunity to undertake a three month summer placement project as a final part of their degree programme.

With the support of leading academic researchers, they apply modelling , analytical and mathematical techniques to analyse a wide range of business opportunities and challenges. Our students are very talented and over the years they have won national prizes for their work and added value to organisations with their work.

For students, it is a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate they can apply the techniques they have learnt in the lecture room to a real-life business problem and gain valuable work experience. Find out more about why students find this part of the course so important for their future employability.

For all types of business organisations, it is your opportunity to sponsor a student to address a challenging business issue or opportunity of your choice. Read more about the opportunities that a summer project could create in your organisation, or contact one of our Industrial Liaison Officers Peter Becque and Julie Hickman .

Facts about the scheme

This scheme has been running over 30 years

Each year, over 60 students work on projects for external organisations

Projects come from a diverse range of organisations

The scheme is popular, with over two thirds of our sponsors offering projects year after year.

I have been involved with projects from Southampton since 2004 and the students who have undertaken projects for me have been excellent in their approach determination to complete both the industrial based project and dissertation. This is reflected in that three achieved awards for their thesis, five have gone on to work as contractors for Ford Motor Company two of which have become permanent employees to me this reflects the high standards expected.
