CORMSIS appointments September 2020

The Centre of Operational Research, Management Science and Information Systems (CORMSIS) spans Mathematical Sciences and Southampton Business School at the University of Southampton. Never before has the CORMSIS research centre been more relevant in assisting organisations and people to apply advanced mathematical and analytical modelling to make better decisions.

Chair of CORMSIS Business Advisory Board (BAB)

Shamma Musthapha (Boeing) succeeds Dr Ian Rowley (Red Scientific)

Members of the BAB from industry, government and charitable organisations play a key role in shaping the strategic direction of CORMSIS research, and contribute invaluable ‘real world’ experience and insights into shaping our student programmes and student experience.

From autumn 2020, we welcome Sham Musthapha from Boeing as Chair of the BAB. Chris Lord, Head of Corporate Partnerships at University of Southampton comments “The University of Southampton has a longstanding relationship with Boeing and the appointment of Sham Musthapha to the role of Chair of the CORMSIS Business Advisory Board further strengthens our strategic partnership. Our University of Southampton corporate partnerships play a key role in delivering our strategy and we look forward to continuing to work with Boeing across a range of activities over the coming years”

Sham joined Boeing in 2011 and is responsible for Systems Engineering. Boeing support CORMSIS programmes directly with scholarships, prizes and case studies.  Sham has been a member of the CORMSIS BAB since 2017 and takes over as chair for a two year period.

We thank Ian Rowley from Red Scientific for chairing the BAB for the past two years.  From 2015 Ian has been a consultant at Red Scientific and owner of The Haslemere Bookshop.  Thanks to Ian for his unique contribution facilitating academia/industry engagement.  Ian will remain a member of the BAB.

Director of CORMSIS

Dr Antonio (Toni) Sykora-Martinez succeeds Dr Christine Currie

Dr Toni Martinez-Sykora, Southampton Business School, is appointed Director of CORMSIS from September 2020.  Toni is an Associate Professor in Business Analytics and has most recently been programme leader for MSc Supply Chain Management and Logistics.  Toni has several ongoing research projects funded by EPSRC and Innovate UK in vehicle routing and logistics, revenue management and cutting and packing. 

We thank Dr Christine Currie, Associate Professor, Mathematical Sciences for her leadership and contribution as Director of CORMSIS during a period of growth in student numbers and rankings success (Statistics and Operational Research at Southampton is ranked 37th in the World, QS World Rankings 2021). Christine’s specific interests are in decision making under uncertainty applied to healthcare, disaster management and commercial decisions in revenue management.
