This article explores the potential for applying blockchain technology for regulatory compliance and for reducing compliance costs and easing regulatory burdens. We describe the development of the Project Maison proof-of-concept blockchain system for regulatory reporting of mortgages in the U.K. This case study identified use cases and also the risks of increased supervision and loss of control and the governance challenges and trade-offs inherent in applying a decentralized approach to regulatory management.

Dr Daniel Gozman, is the Director of Engaged Research and Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney Business School (AUS) and an Honorary Fellow at Henley Business School at the University of Reading (UK). Danny received his PhD from the London School of Economics. He is a member of the LSE’s Outsourcing Unit and a Research Fellow at UCL’s Centre for Blockchain Technologies. Danny is a Freeman at the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists (Livery Company of the City of London). Currently, his work focuses on the intersection between policy, emergent technology and innovation. He has acted as an academic adviser to international law firms and analyst groups and as an external examiner to higher education institutions. Danny has received two SWIFT Institute grants investigating fraud and market abuse through big data analytics and the future generation of payments’ infrastructures. Other research into equity crowdfunding was funded by the EU Horizon 2020 Financial and Institutional Reforms to build an Entrepreneurial Society (FIRES) in Europe. The UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has funded his work into blockchain and algorithmic regulation. He has published within respected peer reviewed journals and regularly presents his work at international conferences aimed at practitioners and academics. He is a Senior Editor for the Journal of Information Technology and an Associate Editor for the Journal of Electronic Commerce Research and Applications. Danny has also contributed to articles in the Sunday Times, Vice Magazine and Computer Weekly. Prior to academia, Danny worked for a global management consultancy and a big four accounting firm.
